Presentation and demonstration of a prototype multilingual authoring tool for the creation of patient information appropriate for publishing in multiple formats (including Web) into multiple languages, without the need for translation.

There is currently a widespread need in Europe for new approaches to the creation and management of content in multiple languages. PILLS proposes to demonstrate the feasibility of combining a domain-specific knowledge base with a generic authoring platform employing 'WYSIWYM' (What You See Is What You Meant) for editing and multilingual text generation.

Using this generic technical solution PILLS aims to demonstrate its approach by generating digital content for one specific sector - the European medical and pharmaceutical products industries. The multilingual authoring application will be designed to support various sub-sectors, including pharmaceuticals developers and manufacturers, health portal publishers and healthcare e-marketplaces.

The project will develop a showcase demonstrator to illustrate and verify the feasibility of the PILLS multilingual authoring concept.


PILLS will, in the course of its 12-month preparatory phase ending December 2001, produce the following outcomes:

The PILLS project workplan has been designed to achieve maximum leverage from the combination of technical development and market exploration and awareness activities. The project combines four key work elements necessary for further development of the multilingual authoring concept Detailed market investigation and analysis Linguistic implementation and development of the prototype WYSIWYM' editor Knowledge modelling for medical%2Fpharmaceutical content Integration of the research prototype with XML.

The PILLS technique enables authors to create technically correct content in multiple languages simultaneously. The authoring tool 'the generic form of which has already been developed in prototype' has a unique approach that enables technical writers to 'author ideas' rather than 'writing text'. Because generation is based on a non-linguistic domain model, the application can create content in any language for which a grammar and lexicon have been developed.

The domain model for PILLS will be developed by using a combination of several medical-domain knowledge resources: a collaboratively developed library of Evidence Based Medicine studies, a collection of Patient Information Leaflets 'PILLS', and prescription drug descriptions already available on the Web. Preliminary market research has verified the general requirement for healthcare content in multiple languages. The requirement affects many actors in the field: pharmaceutical companies, clinical practitioners, retailers of prescription drugs, online publishers of healthcare information, and the public at large.

Market analysis will validate industry requirements in detail; the fieldwork for this task will provide opportunities to develop relationships among actors and identify future collaborators for a full exploitation project, as well as to evaluate a showcase demonstrator and validate the technical outcomes of the project (including domain requirements, XML specifications, etc.). PILLS will create awareness of the opportunities for multilingual authoring through these links with companies, industry organisations and regulatory bodies. In addition, creation of the PILLS Website and presentation of the showcase at three key conferences will provide further opportunities for dissemination.
